Description
Photograph of Mary Jemison Dining Hall at SUNY Geneseo, interior. View of main dining area facing west. Pictures two students standing side by side and looking out of the door beneath an EXIT sign. On back: "Photo slug would full page vertical. p 159" Verso: "Sure it's a big world but it's ours. The exit sign over the door of the Mary Jemison Dining Hall, State University College at Geneseo, N.Y., is more than symbolic to thousands of June graduates across America as they leace college life for careers in the world. Photographer Roger Smith, of the Geneseo State staff, has captured the solitary moment between student life and adult responsibility in all its somberness." Opened 1960, it is named in honor of Mary Jemison (1742-1833) a Scots-Irish colonial woman who was adopted into a Seneca family as a young girl. She later became known as "White Woman of the Genesee."
