Abstract

In this workshop, we employ an environmental justice lens to examine the issues and working conditions that farmworkers experience in Western New York (WNY) and across the state more generally. Specifically, we delve into questions related to the ways that farmworkers in our region experience and access land, as well as the connections between today’s industrialized food system and farmworkers’ rights. Through discussion and art, we will interrogate related power dimensions, the health implications of climate change, and the impacts of neocolonial state, federal, and international policies that perpetuate unjust working conditions and enable ongoing resource extraction and enclosure. Together, workshop participants will generate a policy brief for those seeking to support farmworkers that will both succinctly outline the issues they face and offer a step-by-step guide of actions that individuals can take to advance farmworkers’ rights in New York.
